News Update
Historic Scottsdale property causing some controversy
By Joe Kullman, Tribune
Richard Funke is crossing his fingers that the little 80-some-year-old wooden bungalow he owns has a future as one of Scottsdale's historic buildings.

History, shmistory, say business owners with offices next door to the property where Funke moved the house early this week.

They call the dilapidated structure neighborhood blight.

It was once the home of Charles Miller, a prominent figure in early 20th century Scottsdale. Funke saved it from demolition two years ago when a nephew of Miller began planning new development on the land where the vacant house sat at 75th Place near Thomas Road.

Funke had it moved about two miles to his downtown half-acre tract on First Street near Goldwater Boulevard, where the 900-square-foot house with broken windows and a gaping hole in one side rests on a platform of steel girders.

City officials said Funke isn't violating any building or property codes. Some neighbors are not pleased.

There's legal, and then there's right and wrong, and it doesn't seem right to me that he can do this, said Bill Doss Sr. It's an eyesore that's going to hurt our property values.

Doss said his building contracting company, DK Realtec, spent a big sum renovating a building for its office across the street from Funke's property, and he fears the old house will detract from the street's revitalized look.

Steve Prince, owner of CTS Advertising, said it is crippling his efforts to sell his office building next to Funke's property. A prospective buyer backed out after he saw that monstrosity, Prince said.

I've never seen anything like this shack in Scottsdale. I'm all for preserving historic buildings, but this looks like it's beyond preservation. It looks more like firewood, he said.

Mayor Mary Manross inspected the site in response to neighbors' complaints.

I just hope (Funke) does something soon. Property owners deserve to know what's going to happen, she said.

Funke said he plans to convert a rental house on his property into an office and build a multistory retail and loft apartment complex. He said he might try to enhance restoration of the Miller house with 1920s-era furnishings.

If enough original architectural features are restored, the city's Historic Preservation Commission might consider it for historic designation, said preservation director Bob Cafarella.

The house was built about 1915 near Indian School and Scottsdale roads on land that had been part of the original ranch of Scottsdale founder Winfield Scott.

Miller served in the state Legislature and on the Scottsdale school board and helped establish Scottsdale's first high school.

He was instrumental in bringing electricity to the area in 1918. Miller Road was named for him.
